Counter – A script that collects information about the visitors to a web page. This may include hits, page views, unique visitors, unique IPs, etc. Many web hosts integrate advanced statistics packages into their products that we may use to collect information from visitors to our site.
Conversion Rate – The ratio of visitors to a site, to a specific action; usually making a sale or generating a lead to a future sale (submitting contact information). This ration is expressed as a percentage.<!–mep-nl–><!–mep-nl–>Example: 500 visitors today, with 10 sales = 2%
Cost per Click (aka CPC): A method of advertising where the advertiser is charged an agreed-upon amount when a user clicks on a link to their web page.
Cost per Mil (aka CPM): The cost per 1000 impressions of a particular advertisement regardless of user actions. The M represents the Latin term for one thousand.
Crawler (aka Robot or Spider) A script running for a search engine that travels the web, through hyperlinks, storing URLs and indexing content of pages it encounters. These results are then ranked and appear in Search engine result pages (SERPs)
Cross-linking: The interlinking of several websites owned by one party in order to artificially boost their search engine rankings. Major search engines deprecate the value of links from the same IP or IP range. Therefore it is only valuable if the sites have relevant content (Do it for the user, and not for Google).
CSV aka comma-separated value file format that uses commas (,) to separate data fields. Commonly used by affiliate programs for data feeds, and by shopping engines (like Froogle) to update merchant and product information.
Custom Error Page – Default pages display when a website encounters errors, such as a 404 (web page not found) error. A custom error page preserves the look and feel of the site and provides helpful information to the site visitor.
Dedicated Server – a server that hosts only one website. These are recommended for high traffic (example: Google.com) or high bandwidth sites (those that rely on multimedia presentations).
